Internet is a fast and new world. It is a place where we all are of new
entering. Its characteristics create a new “supreme rule”: success goes to
the movement, with the creativity. The law of the network resembles: “It
is not large which beats the small one, but it fast which beats the slow
one”. Since often smallest is the famous fastest being.
If the first users of the network were the researchers, the contractors
and companies very quickly became aware of the enormous market which would
represent medium-term Internet. This new space being virgin of any
history, one invented new manners there of selling, new economic models,
more or less inspired, copied on the “old world”.
“A long time ago” - i.e. 18 months -, the start-ups which made “one” of
the newsletters reproduced a single model. Logic was B2C: company with the
ultimate consumer. The services on line were to be free (information,
e-mail, plays). The profitability was considered only at the horizon of a
few years, thanks to publicity. The companies choosing a directly paying
model were rare.
The carriers of project preferred to take as a starting point Yahoo!. This
site had mainly built its model on the advertising sale of space. The high
number of pages seen, visitors, possibilities of targeting of the
advertisements made of Yahoo! a company quickly profitable. In fact, all
the young ambitious growths dreamed to be “Yahoo! free e-mail”, or “Yahoo!
free lodging”
After one year and advertising half of model, many start- ups realized
that the released resources were not sufficient. They were then turned
over towards their model, Yahoo! , and noted that the sources of financing
had diversified. The electronic trade had appeared! One can buy on Yahoo!
Any purchase brings back additional incomes! That here is an idea
richissime! In a few weeks, all the plans of businesses envisaged a double
source of income: publicity AND electronic trade.
June at December 1999: in the same line, the only sites attracting
investors and communicating were directed sites “B2C”. Amazon.com was with
its higher, the booksellers, record dealers multiplied. Inside these main
tendencies, “currents” were distinguished. There were the month “grouped
purchases”, the month “auction sales”, the month “sites female”, the month
“events of the life (maternity, death, marriage)”, the month “surfing
remunerated” where successively the concept was invented, the idea liked,
and 10 advertisements of sites dealing with the same topic flowered, each
one of course having vocation to become leader,
world/European/French-speaking number 1.
